Introduction Flashcards
What is biology?
Science of living things/life
What is life?
Life or living things are composed of cells. They have a cellular structure.
Living things can be alive or dormant?
Both
Homeostasis
They maintain your organism stable in response to external environmental changes.
Reproduction
The ability of life to create more life.
Differences between sexual and asexual reproduction?
Sexual:
* 2 parents
* genetically unique offspring
* meiosis involved
* fusion of haploid sex cells
Asexual:
* 1 parent
* genetically identical offspring
* mitosis involved
* diploid cells reproduce via mitosis
Response
The capability of an organism to respond and interact with the environment. (ex: getting a drink when you are thirsty)
Nutrition
Source of energy for an organism’s metabolic activities.
Excretion
All living things excrete metabolic waste matter.
Growth
All living things can grow and develop throughout their lifespan.
autopoiesis
self creation/production
alive
when organs perform their functions
dormancy
state of low metabolic activity due to environmental stress
growth (meaning)
increase in mass and size of an organism
development (meaning)
transformation of an organism through their lifespan
