Introduction Flashcards
Ecology
The study of the interactions that take place among organisms and their environment.
Biosphere
The part of Earth that supports life.
Ecosystem
System formed by the interaction of a community of organisms with their physical environment.
Population
All the organisms in an ecosystem that belong to the same species.
Community
All the populations in an ecosystem.
Habitat
The place in which an organism lives.
Limiting factor
Anything that restricts the number of individuals in a population.
Succession
Gradual process of change in an ecosystem …by progressive replacement of one community by another until a stable climax reach.
Pioneer species
A group of organisms, such as lichens, found in the primary stage of succession & that begin the soil building process of an area/region.
Climax community
A community that has reached a stable stage of ecological succession.
Biome
An area classified according to the species that live in that location.
Tundra
A vast treeless plain in the Arctic regions with permanent frozen subsoil.
Taiga
Northern subarctic coniferous forests.
