Functional Therapy is a form of bodywork that addresses any dysfunctions in movement or the body’s ability to work optimally
What is the purpose of Functional Therapy
Functional Therapy aids in restoring proper movement and function to the body to speed up healing, promote optimal athleticism and decrease the chance of injury
Myo-Manipulative Functional Therapy
The manipulation of muscles to restore proper function to the body
Definition of Massage
The rubbing and kneading of muscles and joints of the body with the hands or tools to relieve pain and tension
Canine Massage
- The practice of massage on dogs
- Modifications of human and equine massage techniques
- Can be performed by hand or using tools.
- Improves Range of motion, decreases pain
Benefits of Canine Massage
- Improves circulation
- Helps return stagnant blood toward the heart.
- Helps drain lymph fluid.
- Improves muscles tone
- Prevents adhesion formation
- Stretches connective tissues and reduces stiffness

Swedish Massage
- Includes all of the classical massage strokes:
- Effluerage, Petrissage, Tapotment, Friction - Strokes run parallel with the flow of body fluids to return them towards the center of the body (towards the heart)
Effluerage
- Goal is to relax the dog and warm up the tissues
2. All Swedish massages begin and end with effluerage
Petrissage
- Kneading, wringing, shaking and deep vibrations
- Compression and release techniques
- These help influence the deep tissue
Tapotment
- Light vibration, hacking, clapping, tapping and pounding
- Stimulates proprioceptors, improves blood flow, relaxes the muscles
- This is a rhythmic type massage
Friction Massage
This utilizes a short, fast movement that provides cross-fiber friction to a local area of the muscle
