The four pillars of realism:
Proportions
Value
Color
Detail
Three signs you should call an artwork finished
Your drawing still looks the same after you have made changes
You are searching for mistakes
If overall, you’re happy with your drawing drawing
Three parts of a colored pencil:
Pigment
Binder
Casing
Pigment
The part of the colored pencil core which is the actual color.
Binder
The part of the colored pencil core that holds everything together. Can be wax or oil based.
Wax-based pencils are…
Softer, and good for blending
Oil based pencils are…
Harder, and great for details
Casing
Part of the pencil that protects the lead. This is normally made of wood.
Soft cores are better for
Blending, layering, easily achieving colors
Hard-core’s are better for
Creating photo-realistic details
Lightfastness
How fade resistant your colored pencils are when exposed to light
When is lightfastness important?
When creating art to sell
Or: display for a long time
5 things to consider when choosing paper
Size Thickness Surface Tone Archival or Acid Free
Smoother paper
Is great for blending, but may not be able to take on many layers of pencil.
Textured paper
Should be used with solvent. Paper that it’s too rough can be difficult to get fine details into.
