Introduction Flashcards
Outline reasons for the mechanical testing of metals to the point of destruction
Can give specific data to determine the degree of properties such as hardness, toughness, ductility, strength, etc.
Can determine the suitability of materials before they are used in a product
Method of quality control
Determines the success of heat treatments (hardening, Tempering etc.) on products.
What are the advantages of mechanical testing?
Values for properties such as strength, ductility, hardness, toughness, elasticity, fatigue, creep, etc. can be ascertained;
Standardisation of components can be achieved;
Quality control is maintained;
The success of heat treatments can be measured.
Why are mechanical tests carried out?
Mechanical tests are carried out on materials to assess how they might perform when they are put into use.
