Introduction Flashcards
A brief intro
What is the nervous system?
It is a major controlling, regulatory and communicating system in the body.
What is the function of the nervous system?
The nervous system detects and responds to changes inside and outside the body.
How is the response of the nervous system as compared to the endocrine system?
The nervous system response is immediate whereas the endocrine system response is mainly slower and more prolongued.
What kind of actions does the nervous system induces?
The nervous system induces involuntary and voluntary actions.
The nervous system is divided into 2 sub-division. They are:
The Central Nervous System(CNS) and Peripheral Nervous System(PNS).
A change in the internal environment would engage the nervous system to maintains _________ and _________.
Homeostasis and involuntary functions.
e.g blood pressure and the composition of the blood
A change in the external environment would engage the nervous system to maintains _________ and _________.
Posture and voluntary activities.
What kind of impulses are found in the nervous system?
Nerve impulses also called electrochemical messages.
How many neurons does the brain has?
100 billion neurons
The nervous system carries out an array of functions which can be grouped into 3 categories. What are they?
Sensory, integrative and motor functions.
