What is social influence?
The effect that words, actions or the presence of other people have on our thoughts, feelings, attitudes, behaviour
What is social psychology?
The scientific study of the way that people’s thoughts, feelings and behaviours are influenced by the real or imagined presence of other people
What is construal?
The way in which people perceive and comprehend the world
What is the fundamental attribution error?
Tendency to overestimate the extent to which people’s behaviour is due to internal, dispositional factors, and to underestimate the role of situational factors.
WHat is naive realism?
Belief we perceive things as they really are
What are the two central motives in human perceptions / construals of the world around them?
Need to feel good about self, need to be accurate
What is self esteem?
People’s evaluation of own self-worth - extent to which they view themselves as good, competent and decent
What is the self esteem motive?
The need to feel good about oneself
What is the social cognition motive?
The need to be accurate
