Highly modernist text
it represents their motto “to make it new” ⇒ novel = to make things new.
Modernists wanted to renew literature because thought world has changed ++ so has to change the way to describe the real.
The novel = ++ emblematic of its age. It ran through countless editions.
It contrasts with the difficulty Lawrence had to publish its book at first. The book had gone from a very perception from downwrite scandal (it was forbidden at first) and the American edition was private edition, financed by the reader.
Depending on the era it has been read = text perceived ++ differently
1920s : after WW2, human realised that violence and war were an ingredient of the human mind + moment of the new woman was emerging but not yet right to vote
