A

The Corn Laws were tariffs and restrictions on imported food and grain (“corn”) enforced in Great Britain. They were designed to keep grain prices high to favour domestic producers, and represented British mercantilism.
They were passed between 1814 &dn 1846.

What is the 1833 Factory act?

A

It is an act which restricted the employment of children in factories, and in the same year the House of Commons approved a grant of £20,000 to the two voluntary bodies. It was the very first occasion on which government assistance to schools was given.

What was the 1832 Great reform act about ?

A

A parliament act:

Disenfranchising little boroughs and reducing others to only one MP

creation of new constituencies

It enlarged the franchise’s property qualification in the counties, to include small landowners, tenant farmers, and shopkeepers
) It created a uniform franchise in the boroughs, giving the vote to all householders who paid a yearly rental of £10.

What was the new poor law of 1834 about?

A

The new Poor Law ensured that the poor were housed in workhouses, clothed and fed. Children who entered the workhouse would receive some schooling. In return for this care, all workhouse paupers would have to work for several hours each day.

What is the difference between the Tories and the Whigs?

A

Tories have evolved into the Conservatives, Whigs have evolved into the Labour Party.

Tories were exclusively made up of landed aristocracy. They were against reforming the current political system and resistant to change and revolution.

Whigs were mainly aristocrats but increasingly drew support from ‘new money’ the industrial and commercial middle-class. They were less resistant to change and became more and more pro reform as the influence of the new middle class over them grew,

What is the People’s charter?

A

The People’s Charter detailed the six key points that the Chartists believed were necessary to reform the electoral system and thus alleviate the suffering of the working classes – these were:

  • Universal suffrage
  • No property qualifications
  • Annual parliaments
  • Equal representation
  • Payment of the Mp’s
  • Vote by secret ballot
