Intro To Upper Limb Flashcards
Where is the pectoral girdle (shoulder)?
Clavicle, scapula and muscles attached to them
Where is the arm?
Between shoulder and elbow joints
bone of arm = humerus
Contains anterior and posterior muscle compartments
What is the forearm?
Region between the elbow and wrist joint
Bones = radius and ulna
Contains A and P muscle compartments
Where is the hand?
Distal to the wrist
Discussed: palms (anteriorly) and dorsum (posteriorly)
What is the shoulder joint?
Glenohumeral joint - synovial ball and socket
formed by articulation between scapula and proximal humerus
Highly mobile - allows us to position hand
What is the elbow joint like?
Allows flexion and extension of forearm
Synovial hinge joint
Articulation of distal humerus with ulna and radius
Imp
What are the proximal and distal radioulnar joints like?
Synovial
Between radius and ulna
Allow pronation and supination of the forearm and hand
What is the radiocarpal joints like
Wrist joints
Synovial join
Articulation between distal radius and two of the carpal bones
Allows flexion, extension, abduction and adduction
What is key about the scapula?
Moves on the posterior chest wall
What movements does the scapula allow? (SHOW)
Protraction
Retraction
Elevated
Depressed
Rotated
What parts does the upper limb consist of?
pectoral girdle
arm
forearm
hand
Which joints are in the Upper limb?
glenohumeral joint
elbow joint
proximal and distal radioulnar joints
radiocarpal joint
What movements does the shoulder joint show?
7 movements:
1. Flexion
2. Extension
3. Abduction
4. Adduction
5. Internal (medial) rotation
6. External (lateral) rotation
7. Circumduction
What movements does the shoulder joint show?
7 movements:
1. Flexion
2. Extension
3. Abduction
4. Adduction
5. Internal (medial) rotation
6. External (lateral) rotation
7. Circumduction
What are movements of the shoulder almost always accompanied by?
Movements of the scapula on the chest wall e.g. when we raise our upper limb the scapula rotates
