Intro To Research Methods Flashcards
what is primary data
Data that is firsthand collected from you and no one else has that data eg questionnaire
What is secondary data
Data that is collected from sources which already have what you are looking for eg books, internet
Positivists
Prefer numerical data such as lab experiments, closed questions , believe sociology is a science
Interprativists
Prefer literary data such as interviews observations and believe sociology isn’t a science
Quantitative data
Numerical data
Statistics
Quantitative data
More in depth and goes into reasoning for example asking someone how they feel after having a a baby etc
Validity
It’s how truthful some thing is for example if a research is valid is asking if it’s truthful
Reliability
This is for instance if a research can be carried out again. If it’s repeatable it is reliable
Sampling
It is a sub group of a target population that is being researched for a specific aim
Stratified sampling
a method of sampling that involves the division of a population into smaller subgroups known as strata.
Quasi-random sampling
Choosing every nth person on a list to be part of a research. This way there is no researcher bias
Quota sampling
a non-probability sampling method that relies on the non-random selection of a predetermined number or proportion of units
Snowball sampling
a non-probability sampling technique in which the samples have rare traits
Opportunity sampling
Selecting participants based on who’s willing to and available eg asking questions to someone on the street
Representativeness
Is the piece of research generalisable ?
