Intro to research design Flashcards
What is ontology?
what reality is
What is the spectrum of ontology?
based on if you think reality can exist separately from human practices and understandings, from realism to relativism.
What is realism?
there is a single truth that can be observed objectively.
what is relativism
what is true varies across time, context and culture. There are multiple realities, and we can’t ever get beyond our version of reality.
What is epistemology?
how we access/understand reality.
What is the spectrum of epistemology?
based on whether you believe that through research you found something that was hidden but always existed, or if through research you contribute to the production of reality, from positivism to constructionism.
What is positivism?
truth can be observed, it has always existed. Valid knowledge is produced through accurate and objective observation.
What is constructivism?
truth is tied to the world we live in, and the knowledge that we see as truth is a product of how we understand it.
What is grounded theory?
closely grounded to the data collected, reverses hypothesis testing approach.
What is interpretative phonological analysis?
exploring lived experiences of a particular phenomenon, assumes people try and make sense of their experiences and explores this
What is narrative analysis?
explores plots and stories.
What are the methods of analysing talk?
conversation analysis and discourse analysis.
What are confounding variables?
variables that can explain the relationship between the IV and the DV.
What are order effects?
If an experiment involves the same participant doing more than one condition, performance in the following conditions can be affected by e.g boredom.
What are demand characteristics?
cues from the experimenter that influence the participant.
