What is psychosocial therapy?
Therapy designed to supports clients with:
*symptoms
*reintegration back into society
*improve functioning
*quality of life
Combining ‘psycho’ (psychological state, function and behaviour) with ‘social’ ability to relate to others to function in a society
What are different types of psychosocial therapy?
- CBT
- Group Interventions (e.g. group CBT)
- Family Intervention
- Carer Support
- Employment Support
- Social Skills Training
- Cognitive Remediation

What evidence base does CBTp have?
Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses of RCTs have found that:
* CBT for Psychosis is effective in reducing the severity of positive symptoms
What evidence base does FI have?
Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses of RCTs have found that (Sin, 2017; Ma, 2018)
“Family Intervention is effective in reducing relapse & hospital admission rates”
What evidence base does Carer Support have?
Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses of RCTs have found that (Sin, 2017)
“Carers Support is effective in reducing carer burden & High EE & increasing understanding about psychosis”
What are CBTp exlusion criteria?
- When the client is to unwell and requires inpatient admission
- When the client has a substance misuse problem (which doesn’t allow them to benefit from or attend the sessions)
- When they had a head injury- need for neurological evaluation first
- When psychosis is not the main issues (e.g. they have PTSD, Depression which are more distressing)
- If the client has no therepeutic goals
Group CBT
Not a substitute for individual CBTp!

Individual CBTp
- Aim to reduce distress & disability with symptoms
- Improve coping & functioning
- Comprised of: Engagement, Assessment, Formulation, Intervention, & Relapse Prevention
- Formal CBTp models informed by evidence
- Developing idiosyncratic symptoms specific
personalised formulations - Third wave approaches can help with on-going symptoms
