Summative
Confirmation Bias

Evidence

Empirical
Based on trained observation and
accurate measurement.
Pseudoscience
A collection of beliefs or practices mistakenly thought to be based on valid
science.
Pop Psychology
Refers to the concepts and theories about human mental life and behavior that are supposedly based on psychology and are considered credible and accepted by the wider populace.
Critical Thinking
Purposeful, reasoned, and goal-directed process
of exploring a situation or problem.
Three Questions:
What scientific evidence supports this claim?
Has this topic been studied empirically?
Am I listening to (or reading) someone else’s opinion, or is this information based on facts that are accepted by
unbiased experts?
Evolutionary Perspective
How humans’ evolutionary past shapes certain cultural universals that all human beings share.
Monogenic
A single gene that gives rise to a trait.
Polygenic
A handful of genes jointly gives rise to a trait.
Omnigenic
A few core genes are essential but all of the genes are involved.
Cultural Perspective
Seeks to understand how cultural context affects people’s thoughts and preferences.
