Intro to Prosthodontics Flashcards
What does an articulator do?
Simulates jaws- reproduce recorded relationship/movement of the mandible to the maxilla.
What is used to assist the study of occlusion and the formation of the occlusal surfaces of prostheses and restorations?
Articulator
What is a dental surveyor?
An instrument used to survey casts and may also be used to prepare parallel surfaces on restorations.
What are the extra-oral anatomical consequences of missing teeth?
Change in facial appearance and TMJ problems
What the intra-oral anatomical consequences of missing teeth?
Alveolar bone resorption, tooth wear, tooth movement e.g. overeruption/tilting, loss of function, loss of hard and soft tissues which support the face
What is a removable partial denture?
A set of replacement teeth that only replaces some of the teeth that is not fixed permanently in the mouth.
What are some reasons patients have missing teeth?
Cancer, caries, periodontitis, trauma, hypodontia and endodontic diseases
What is a shortened dental arch?
dentition of no more than twenty teeth- posterior teeth are missing
What is conventional bridgework?
Abutment teeth either side of the space are prepared for crowns (retainers) and the replacement tooth (pontic) is held in place by the retainers
What is an implant supported crown?
Replace root of tooth with metal
What is support?
Resistance to vertical movement of the denture towards the tissue
What is retention?
Resistance to displacement of the denture away from the tissue
What is stability?
Resistance to horizontal movement of the denture
What is a rest (what does it do)?
Rests sit on top of the tooth to give SUPPORT
What is a clasp and what does it do?
Clasps give retention to the denture
