Intro to Print Reading - 1 Flashcards
What is the function of a print?
A print is a copy of a technical drawing used in the shop or at a worksite.
What are prints used for?
Prints are used to communicate the information from engineers and designers to people who perform tasks like troubleshooting.
What are two ways to create technical drawings?
Sketching and Computer-Aided Drafting
What is sketching?
Sketching is a form of free-hand drawing that does not use any special tools.
What is sketching used for?
Sketching is a method of relaying information and ideas more quickly without it being precise.
What is Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD)?
Computer-Aided Drafting lets a drafter create create drawings with a computer.
What is CAD used for?
CAD is used for a more accurate and precise drawing but may not replace regular sketching.
What are two methods to draw an object?
Multiview and Isometric
What is a Multiview drawing?
A Multiview drawing is a drawing that has multiple views of each side of an object.
What ares Multiview drawing used for?
Multiview drawings are used to showcase every feature from each side of an object.
What is an Isometric drawing?
An isometric drawing is a type of pictorial drawing that gives an impression of a three-dimensional object.
What is an Isometric drawing used for?
Isometric drawings are used for simplifying the appearance of an object.
What are the three principal dimensions of an object?
Width, Height, and Depth
Width
the distance across the front of an object
Height
the distance from the bottom to the top of an object
Depth
the distance from an object’s front to its back
How do you sketch horizontal lines correctly?
Place points and always draw from the left point to the right point
How do you sketch vertical lines correctly?
Place points and always draw from the top point to the bottom point
What should you do to ensure the line’s smoothness and straightness?
Add more points
How do you sketch arcs correctly?
Sketch the straight lines to intersect. Mark the starting and ending ticks at the same distance of each line. Make a line between both ticks which creates a triangle. Place a mark (cross) in the center of the triangle, and then sketch the arc. (Remove any unnecessary lines)
How do you sketch arcs to lines correctly?
Sketch the straight lines to intersect. Mark the starting and ending ticks at the same distance of each line. Make a line above both ticks, creating a triangle. Place a center point mark (cross) in the center of the triangle, and then sketch the arc (Remove the unnecessary lines)
How do you sketch arcs to arcs correctly?
Sketch the straight lines to intersect from the end points of the arcs. Mark the starting and ending ticks at the same distance of each line. Make a line between both ticks, creating a triangle. Place a center point mark (cross) in the center of the triangle, and then sketch the arc (Remove the unnecessary lines)
How do you sketch circles correctly?
Create a center point and sketch a vertical & horizontal line to each of their points around the center. Put ticks on each line at the same distance. Lightly sketch lines through each tick to make a square. Draw a diagonal lines between each mini square. Make center points (cross) in the outer triangle of each min square. Sketch your circle. (Remove the unnecessary lines)
What is a view?
A view is a position from which an object can be seen.
How many standard views would a multi view drawing have?
As many as six view. Front, Top, Right side, rear, bottom, and left side.
What can a multi view drawing with multiple angles be called?
Third-Angle Projection
What is the Glassbox method?
The Glassbox method is used to visualize an object in a glass box to show all of its visible sides.
What is the Glassbox method used for?
The Glassbox method is used to visualize how an object would be drawn in a multi-view drawing.
What is important when working with the Glassbox method?
Alignment, and unfolding each side like a paper dice
What is the Alphabet of Lines?
The Alphabet of Lines is a set of line types that are used on a print to represent a physical object.
What are some of the most common lines?
Object, Hidden, Center, Dimension & Extension, and Section Lines
What are the three lines used to create a multi-view drawing?
Object, Hidden, and Center Lines
What is an Object line?
Object lines are solid lines used to show the size and shape of an object.
What is a Hidden line?
Hidden lines are dashed lines that are used to represent features that may be hidden in a particular view.
What is a Center line?
Center lines are alternating dashes (One long dash followed by one short dash) that are used to show symmetry. It indicates that an object is being split in half.
What is the function of Line Precedence?
Line Precedence is used to specify which type of line should be used when two lines overlap in a view.
In which order would you give these lines below priority?
- Center lines
- Object lines
- Hidden lines
First, Object lines. Second, Hidden lines. Third, Center lines.
