Intro to Polymers PT 3 Flashcards
What is the definition of molecular shape or conformation?
Chain bending and twisting are possible by rotation of carbon atoms around their chain bonds
What does monomer orientation dictate with polymer configurations?
- Stereoisomerism
- Tacticity
- Monomer composition (co-polymer)
What does monomer orientation lead to the measurement of?
Chain end-to-end distance R
What is stereoisomerism?
Mirror images that cannot superimpose without breaking a bond
What is tacticity?
stereoregularity or spatial arrangement of R units along chain
What is isotactic?
All R groups on the same side of chain
What is syndiotactic
R groups alternate sides
What is atactic?
R groups randomly positioned
What is cis isomerism?
H and CH3 groups on same side of chain
What is trans isomerism?
H and CH3 group on opposite sides of chain
What is a copolymer?
two or more monomers polymerized together
What is a random copolymer?
A and B randomly positioned along chain
What is an alternating copolymer?
A and B alternate in polymer chain
What is a block copolymer?
large blocks of A units alternate with large blocks of B units
What is a graft copolymer?
Chains of B units grafted onto A backbone
