National accrediting organization for pharmacy technician training programs.
Regulatory compliance
following a group of rules and regulations’ violating them may result in disciplinary action or prosecution in a court of law.
The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP
National professional association that represents pharmacists in healthcare systems. It believes that the mission of pharmacists is to help people make the best use of medications. Helping pharmacists fulfill this mission is the ASHP’s primary objective.
The United States Pharmacopeial (USP)
A voluntary not-for-profit organization that sets standards for the manufacturing & distribution of drugs & related products in the U.S. gov. Prescription & over-the-counter medicines sold in the U.S. are to follow these standards in the USP-NF (National Formulary) USP doesn’t enforce its standards, the Food & Drug administration & other gov. authorities instead.
The Joint Commission
An independent, not-for-profit organization involved in accreditation & certification of more than 22,000 healthcare organizations & programs in the U.S. It created guidelines & standards for all parts of a hospital - including hospital pharmacy for accreditation & certification
Accreditation
- A process in which a professional organization or nongovernmental agency grants recognition to a healthcare institution for ability to meet predetermined criteria for established standards.
Certification
Recognition by a nongovernmental agency attesting an individual met required levels of competency.
Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)
part of U.S. Department of Health and Human Services- inspects hospitals & grants approval to treat Medicare patients. If not approved, it won’t receive reimbursement from treating Medicare patients.
Both CMS and SBP
conduct unannounced site inspections
Each state has a (SBP) to determine the requirements for a pharmacy technician & all has different licensing requirements & laws.

accreditation organization designed to help providers enhance quality of patient care while improving business efficiencies. It also administers the Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board accreditation

standards based on U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention guidelines. It assesses pharmacies that compound medications in any setting.
Food & Drug Administration (FDA)
entity responsible for approving any drug before being marketed in the U.S. Manufacturer must provide proof drug is safe and effective and has more benefitd than risks. proof comes from extensive testing in laboartories on animals for toxicity before sending investigational new drug (IND) application to FDA. then a small # of participants to larger groups.
