What is Pharmacology?
Pharmacology is the study of the effects of drugs and their interactions
What does Toxicology mean?
Toxicology refers to the branch of Pharmacology that deals with the undesirable adverse affects of chemicals on living systems
A drug may be defined as……
A chemical substance other than a nutrient or an essential dietary ingredient, which when administered to a living organism, produced a biological effect
A medicine may be defined as…
A substance containing one or more drugs that is administered to treat a condition or disease
A poison is considered to be….
A drug that has exclusively harmful effects (any substance in the right dose can be a poison)
What is the meaning of Generic Drugs?
A name of a medicine that is a simplified version of the chemical name or Universal name of a medicine.
EXAMPLE: Diazepam
What is the meaning of Proprietary/Trade/Brand named Drugs?
It is the registered trademark used by pharmaceutical companies to identify the preparation of a specific medicine.
EXAMPLE: Valium or Valpam-2
What is the meaning of a Chemical Drug name?
It is the name of the chemical or molecule compound, i.e. ingredients of the drug.
EXAMPLE: 7-chloro-1,3-dihydro-1-methyl-5-phenyl-2H-1,4-benzodiazepin-2-one.
