Intro to Perception Flashcards
What is the definition of perception?
An internal representation of the images sensed, actively interpreting patterns of light as objects.
What is the definition of sensation?
Physically (passively) sensing imagery. i.e. photoreceptors sensing light and the information travelling to the brain
What does the geniculocortical pathway do?
Detect and relay visual information e.g. contrast, shapes, colour.
What does the retinotectal pathway do?
Control head and eye movements, guides visual attention
What is the inverse optics problem?
It’s hard to percieve an object exactly as it is due to lots of variables influencing the image on the retina, so the brain makes a best guess based on experience and context from the information provided in the image.
What is structuralism?
Bottom up perception
A combination of visual elements results in perception
What is Gestaltism?
Relating visual elements results in perception
What is direct perception?
Interaction with the visual environment results in perception
What is constructivism?
Top down processing
Higher level processing supports visual info resulting in perception
What is psychophysics?
The study of the relationship between sensations of physical properties and the perceptions they give
What is bottom-up processing?
Seeing each individual element of the image
What is top-down processing?
Seeing the image as a whole, with expectation modifying how it is perceived
