Intro to Pathology Flashcards
What is the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic etiologies?
Intrinsic is within the body, genetic.
Extrinsic is something external, infectious, toxic, nutritional, physical
What must be understood about a disease in order to develop effective therapies?
The pathogenesis of a disease must be understood in order to develop effective therapies and also dictates the symptoms.
What is the the structure and form of cells when looking for etiology?
Morphology of cell types helps identify disease mechanisms.
Why is morphology important in medicine?
Biopsy and Resections, removal of disease and pathology to be studied for better treatment.
What are the key characteristics in regards to morphology?
- types of cells present
- cellularity, how different are they?
- normal or abnormal pattern of cells?
- necrosis or mitosis present
How is pathology microscopy used during surgery?
A sample of the resection is taken from the margins of the resection and sent to the pathology lab during surgery to ensure all abnormal tissue has been resected.
Frozen Sample, flash freeze and sliced thin for microscopy.
What is the clinical significance of pathology of disease?
- Functional derangement, morphological changes
- Clinical features
- Course of disease
- Prognosis of disease
How are diseases classified?
Based on etiology, pathogenic mechanisms, and organ system effected
