Tragic Flaw

Soliloquy

Exposition
A series of complications that develop the conflict to a high point of intensity
Rising Action
In a tragedy, the turning point or presents a decisive occurrence that determines the future course of events in the play
Crisis
The final action that completes the unraveling of the plot in a play
Catastrophe
The part of a play that follows the catastrophe and ties up any remaining loose ends
Falling Action
Occurring after the climax, you learn what happens to the characters after the conflict is resolved
Resolution
Literally meaning “untie the knot,” this is what happens at the very end of the story
Denouement
Playwright’s written instructions, including notes about set, appearance, and movement of characters
