It is a is a multidisciplinary field concerned with the safety, health, and welfare of people at work (i.e. while performing duties required by one’s occupation).
Occupational safety and health (OSH) or
occupational health and safety (OHS)
What is occupational safety & health?
> Deals with the safety, welfare, and social well-
being of workers in all occupations.
Provides a safe working environment for staff.
Focuses on both physical and mental well-
being.
A legal and human responsibility.
OSH PURPOSES
> ensuring the physical, mental, and social
well-being of workers.
Preventing the unfavorable effects on health caused by working conditions and becoming familiar with an occupational environment of the physical and mental needs of workers.
Performing reviews and
evaluations of work environments to promote safe conditions and compliance with national, state, and local
standards.
OSH OBJECTIVES
a. Maintain the physical, mental and social well-being of workers.
b. Prevent the unfavorable effects on health caused by
working conditions.
c. Become familiar with the occupational environment of physical and mental needs of workers.
d. Consider the issues relating to industrial safety,
occupational medicine, industrial hygiene, training & education, psychology and so on.
e. Improve working conditions and the working
environment to become conducive to safety and health
Importance of occupational safety and health?
- Reducing millions of injuries each year
- Protecting workers from serious injury
- Improving workplace productivity
- Ensuring better brand image, good business, and higher employee morale
- Addressing different types of workplace hazards and concerns such as chemicals and physical hazards, biological agents, psychological fallout, ergonomic issues, and accidents
- Preventing workplace injuries, illnesses, and deaths, as well as the suffering and financial hardship these events can cause for workers, their families, and employers
- Using a proactive approach to managing workplace safety and health

> Employer’s Liability Act was instituted requiring employers to compensate workers who were injured while performing their job
Bureau of Labor was created
1927
Workmen’s compensation Act No. 3428 was passed providing payment of damages by the employer for illness, in addition to injury or death due to employment
1933
Bureau of Labor was named Department of Labor on Dec. 8,1933
1936
Commonwealth Act No. 104 was passed. First legislation directly enjoining management to ensure the promotion of OSH in the workplace. Known as the First Industrial Safety Law.
1945
Commonwealth Act No. 696 was approved to include safety in the installation and operation of boilers and pressure vessels
1948
Philippines became a member of ILO
1954
Enactment of RA No. 1054 (Free Emergency Medical & Dental Treatment Act)
1957
Bureau of Labor Standards was created
1959
