Intro to organic chem Flashcards
Substitution reaction
Substitution reaction involves the replacement of one atom or group of atoms by another atom or group of atoms in an organic molecule.
Addition reaction
Addition reaction involves a small molecule being added to an unsaturated organic molecule to form
only one saturated product.
Elimination reaction
Elimination reaction involves atoms or group of atoms being removed from two adjacent atoms in a saturated organic molecule to produce an unsaturated molecule and a small molecule
Condensation reaction
Condensation reaction involves the combination of two different functional groups with the removal
of a small molecule, such as H2O or HCl.
Hydrolysis reaction
Hydrolysis reaction involves the breaking down of one big molecule into two smaller molecules by the
action of water (usually catalysed by OH− or H+).
Oxidation reaction
Oxidation reaction involves the gaining of oxygen atom(s) and / or the loss of hydrogen atom(s) by
the organic molecule in the reaction with an oxidising agent.
Reduction reaction
Reduction reaction involves the gaining of hydrogen atom(s) and / or the loss of oxygen atom(s) by the organic molecule in the reaction with a reducing agent.
Acid-base reaction
Acid-base reaction involves the losing or gaining of hydrogen ion(s) (H+ ions) by organic molecule in the reaction with an acid or base.
