What parts of pt history are important in OS?
- PMH e.g. diabetes, allergies
- medications e.g. bisphosphonates, NOACs, warfarin
- PDH e.g. problems with extractions, bleeding, infection, dry socket
- SH e.g. alcohol and tobacco
What information is on the ‘pink sticker’?
Pt name, DOB, what tooth to be extracted (quadrant and FDI notation), relevant medical history, triage
What is the chair position when extracting an upper tooth?
between shoulder and elbow height, lying back 45 degrees
What is your position when extracting an upper tooth?
Infront of patient to their right (if right handed)
What is the chair position when extracting a lower tooth?
down and slightly back
What is your position when extracting a lower tooth?
- behind the patient on their right side for lower right teeth (if right handed)
- infront of patient and to their right for lower left teeth
What are the post-operative instructions given after an extraction?
- avoid rinsing mouth for 24 hours
- avoid alcohol today
- avoid smoking
- bite on clean cotton for 15 mins if bleeds
- how to contact you for advice if problems
- explain use of HSMW
- don’t bite lip

What are the stages for staff check during extraction?
- before giving LA, present pt to staff
- get staff to watch LA given
- observe you during extraction
- after notes written and haemostats is achieved
- pt must NOT leave before notes signed by staff
What are possible post-op problems in extraction?
- pain - to be expected
- bleeding
- bruising
- swelling
- infection
- dry socket (alveolar osteitis)
