Define Nationalism.
Identifying with one’s nation and supporting its interests to the exclusion or detriment of other nations. Culturally wanting to sustain and revive language and traditions. Nationalism requires loyalty, devotion and allegiance through
out the group.
Nation V.S. State
A State is a self-governing political entity (exchangeable with “country”).
A Nation is a group that shares a common culture or interest.
A Nation-State is a nation with the same borders as a state.
Sovereignty and its Importance
Sovereignty is supreme power or authority to govern.
Its importance comes from the right of the people to elect their government, laws, etc.
Sovereignty is a power rather than a right.
Define Nationalist Movement and When They Began with examples.
Nationalist Movement: Promoting the interests of a nation with the aim of gaining and maintaining the nation’s sovereignty to create a nation-state.
These movements began between the 18th-19th century.
Examples include:
-The rise of fascism in Europe in the 1930s.
-Ethnic cleansing in Yugoslavia in the 1990s.
Today’s examples:
-Black lives matter
-LGBTQA Pride
-Truckers protest against COVID restrictions.
Define Civic Nation.
Civic nations have a constitution which is usually written by the people.
Many of which are built to protect language and culture. They are also crafted around the geography and traditions
Define disillusioned.
Disappointment in something that is less than what was believed.
Define fortitude.
Strength and ambition.
Define democracy.
Rule by the people, for the people.
How is a nations constitution formed.
People gain rights, become citizens then voters, form an electorate who creates the constitution.
How did nations historically form national identities?
- Nations used to be formed by clans, families and religions.
- The idea of nationality became language+race+borders=country.
What 4 factors lead to modern nationalization?
- Urbanization
- Mass communication
- Total war
- Decline of church
What is nationalization today?
- A nations authority comes from the people
- Countries built nations based on culture, interests and language, however racial influences continue to cause division in nations.
