What is Morality?
The sinfulness or goodness of an act
What are Ethics?
Determining right/wrong or good/evil
What is Absolutism?
Morals are absolute and unchanging— objective
What is Relativism?
Morals are subjective; there are no moral rules that apply to all culture or people in one culture AND no country or person should “impose” their moral rules on any other culture or person. Dependent on CONTEXT.
What is Consequentialism?
Determining what is right or wrong is contingent on the actual consequences which flow from an act.
What is Nonconsequentialism?
Determining what is right or wrong is contingent upon the agent’s inner disposition/intention.
What is Philosophy?
“The love of wisdom.”
A study concerned with the pursuit of wisdom and truth gained through reason and logic.
What is Theology?
“The study of God.”
The pursuit of God through the use of study and interpretation
What is Catholic Morality?
Morality relating to us as Catholics.
What is the Goal of Ethics according to Socrates?
1) Good— “The Good Life”
The thing desired, the ideal
2) Right
The opposite of wrong as defined by some law
3) Ought
Personal obligation, duty, responsibility
What does Philosophy ask? What does Theology ask?
Philosophy: great questions in life, such as the meaning of life
Theology: great questions in life but from the framework of our relationship with God
