What are some risk factors for mental illness
-Low self-esteem
-problems with intrapersonal relationships
-impaired functioning (unable to do activities of daily life)
- overwhelming or unbearable daily life
-feeling of hopelessness ( not able to overcome)
Define (health) vs (unhealthy) in mental health
Healthy:
-can complete daily tasks/ responsibilities
-function effectively in life
- uses EFFECTIVE coping mechanisms ( SLEEPING IS NOT COPING!!!!!)
- patient can self function
-satisfied interpersonal relationships like friendships, relationships or family
- good self esteem
Unhealthy
-Not being physically “sick” but mentally sick such as: forgetfulness of completing daily life tasks
-poor coping mechanisms like using drugs and alcohol= addiction causing

What are some risk factors or some seen connections to mental illness
-low self esteem
-problems/ ineffective intrapersonal relationships with friends, family or failed relationships
-feeling of hopelessness (hard to overcome, patients start to feel trapped)

What is the difference between individual factors and intrapersonal factors
Individual factors: and based on the person (this deals with):
- the biological factor of mental illness like family history
- the patient having fears or worries
- the patient’s inability to distinguish REALITY from FANTASY
- loss of one’s meaning of life
Intrapersonal: this deals with the dealing of TWO people such as:
- ineffective communication
- excessive depending on relationships
- the feeling of no sense of belonging
- living situation
-the patient may have burned bridges with others
- no support group
- loss of emotional control
-isolation
What are some social factors that can cause a potential increase risk for mental illness
- lack of resources for mental health care
- lack of transportation
-high level of violence or trauma of abuse
-homelessness and poverty - negativity that is unwarranted
- discrimination
When giving mental health medication what is something the nurse should monitor for
Serotonin syndrome = too much serotonin in the patient
Can be caused from too high of dose or use of multiple medications
What is it important for patients to have other neuroendocrine (hormones) checked
Want to avoid misdiagnosing patients for mental illness
What are some hormones labs you may see the doctor order
-anti diuretic hormone (ADH)
-oxytocin
- growth hormone
- TSH
- adrenocotropic ACTH)
-prolactin
- melanocyte stimulating hormone
