What are Primary medical terms?
Primary medical terms enable you to prioritize terms in your study of medical terminology.
What 4 types of word parts are used to create complex medical words?
- Word roots
- Combining forms
- Suffixes
- Prefixes
What are word roots?
Word roots usually, But not always, indicate the part of the body involved.
Word roots Examples
- Cardi = heart
- Gastr = stomach
- Nuer = nerve
Note- Word roots do not mean pertaining to or relating to, that meaning comes from the suffix
What are combining forms?
- Created by adding a vowel (usuualy an “O”) at the end of a word root
- Used when connecting word roots or when the word root is joined to a suffix that begins with a consonant
Combining forms examples
EXAMPLES
- Cardi/o = heart
- gastr/o = Stomach
- Nuer/o = nerve
What are suffixes?
- Suffixes usually, but not always, Indicate the procedure, condition, disorder, or disease.
Examples - Cardiomegaly
- Gastralgia
- Neuritis
Suffixes examples
EXAMPLES
- tonsill(tonsil, tonsils) + itis ( inflamation)= tonsillitis
what are prefixes?
prefixes usually, but not always, indicate location, time, number, or status.
examples
- pericardium
- epigastric
- polyneuritis
example of prefixes
pre(before)+ nat(birth)+ al (pertaining to)= prenatal(the time and events before birth)
what does -algia mean?
Pain, Painfull condition
what does dys- mean?
bad, difficult or painful
what does -ectomy mean?
Surgical removal, cutting out, excision
what does hyper- mean?
excessive, increased
what does hypo- mean?
deficient, decreased
what does -itis mean?
inflammation
what does -osis mean?
abnormal condition,disease
what does -ostomy mean?
the surgical creation of an artificial opening to the body surface
what does -otomy mean?
cutting, surgical incision
