Intro to Manufacturing Flashcards
Terminology
DEF: Manufacturing
Conversion of raw materials and information into products for the satisfaction of human needs.
All activities involved in materials handling and information handling can be considered as manufacturing
DEF: Manufacturing Process
Altering/improving the form/shape and properties of the materials (must improve attributions of a product in manufacturing)
DEF: Manufacturing Equipment
Equipment used to perform manufacturing processes (CNC Machine)
DEF: Manufacturing System
Integrated whole, comprehensive term for mechanism of manufacture
What do we consider when selecting materials for products and components?
Properties of materials (magnetic properties)
Availability + cost (how scarce material is)
Service Life (durability, corrosion, resistance)
Environmental Impact
Gen: Manufacturing Processes/Technologies
Metal Casting
Plastic Injection-Molding
Powder Processing
Forming/shaping
Machining
Additive Tech (joining/adding/assembly)
Property-enhancing:
Surface hardening
Heat Treatment
Gen: Materials in Manufacturing
Metals
Plastics
Ceramics
Composites
DEF: Net-shape/Near-net shape
Part is made in only one operation at or close to final specific dimensions, tolerances, surface finish
DEF: Vertical Integration
Strategy where company owns/controls its supplies/distributors (Rare for many companies to be completely vertically integrated, but companies such as Tesla are highly integratied)
Components of VI: Raw materials -> component parts manufacturing -> assembly -> retail
International Manufacturing
USA: Advanced tech, pro-business policies
Japan: diverse portfolio, high quality
Germany: investment in R&D, precision and high performance industries
