Intro to Indigenous Health Flashcards
What is the ‘1000 days’?
The 1000 days between a woman’s pregnancy and her child’s second birthday offer a unique window of opportunity to shape healthier and more prosperous futures.
We know that a healthy start to life sets up good health throughout life.
Indigenous children are the most vulnerable group of children in Australia and disparities with non-indigenous children in some outcomes have widened in recent years.
It is a new Public health approach: brain growth across the lifespan, addressing early life stressors.
What is the Abecedarian project?
Process of education that engages 4 months old - 2 years in learning literature. People with developmental delays/vulnerabilities can use programs such as this to increase their IQ percentiles by 15%.
- Brain growth prior to birth needs to be take advantage of however this is not being done in practice.
- This will lead to pathways of resilience later in life.
What is ‘Closing the Gap’?
-Currently there are large gaps between the life expectancy of indigenous Australians and the rest of the population and this campaign aims to give the opportunity to have a long life to all Australians.
