Intro To Implants Flashcards
Definition of Dental implants
A device surgically placed in the jaw for the purpose of supporting a crown/bridge/denture
3 Components of dental implants
Crown
Abutment
Root
Healing cap
A device used to close the implant once inserted to prevent debris from entering,
Facilitate the surrounding soft tissues
Osseointegration
Process whereby the bone grows onto implant surface and anchors implant into bone
Factors for successful osseointegration
Biocompatible material
Atraumatic surgery
Undesturbed healing phase
Stable
Why is Titanium biocompatible
When exposed to air, a dense titanium dioxide layer is formed, which is very stable and corrosion resistant
Why to choose dental implants?
Address patient needs
High success rate
Durable
Prevents bone loss
Easier to maintain
Preserve dental tissue of adjacent teeth
What determines the success of dental implants?
Successful Osseointegration
Restore normal contour, function, aesthetics
Stable, immobile
No pain, infection or parasthesia
No radiolucency surrounding implant
No vertical bone loss (<2mm/year)
Indications for dental implants
Edentulous patients
Intolerance to RPD
Pt with high aesthetic demands or function
Contra indications of dental implants
Periodontal disease
Serious systemic disease
Smokers
Not enough bone support
Bruxism
Advantages of dental implants
Provides additional support
80% of natural biting force
Resistant to dental disease
Increase confidence, aesthetics and quality of life
Disadvantages of dental implants
Very expensive
Surgery required
Treatment takes long time
Complications of dental implants
Intra-op: flap tear, perforations, nerve injury, dislodge into mx sinus, breakers
Immediate post-op: Swelling, pain, haemorrhage, nerve injury
Delayed: Infection, 2 haemorrhage, nerve injuries, mobility, exposed
