What is sex?
Genetic and physical characteristics that differentiate male and female.
What is gender?
Psychosocial characteristics that differentiate masculinity and femininity.
What is sexuality?
The physical, psychological, social, cultural, and spiritual aspects of an individual that make up his or her unique sexual being.
What are the 8 main topics surrounding sexuality?
Beliefs and values, personality (personal choice), self image, gender (roles & orientation), socialization (relationships), physical expression, body image, and communication
What did Dennis Dailey (1984) describe as the 5 aspects of sexuality?

What is sensuality?
The need and ability to be aware of and accepting of our own body.
Sensuality includes:
Anatomy and physiology, sexual response, body image, satisfaction of skin hunger, attraction template (kickstarts our arousal), and fantasy “most of sexuality is in the mind”
What is intimacy?
The need and ability to experience emotional closeness to another person
Dennis Dailey considered intimacy to include:
Caring, sharing, risk taking, vulnerability, self disclosure
What is sexual intimacy?
Ability to give feedback & be heard in sexual relationships
What is sexual identity?
The continual process of discovering who we are in terms of our sexuality.
Sexual identity includes:
Gender roles, orientation, self esteem, confidence level, relationship, roles as child and adult, perception of self sex/gender
What is reproduction?
All health that relates to sex
Reproduction includes:
Reproductive bias re values and attitudes, renewal of life - morality issues, anatomy and physiology, lifestyles, contraception and fertility issues, STI including AIDS
What is sexualization?
The use of our sexuality to influence, control or manipulate others eg. rape, putting down women
