intro to histology Flashcards
epithelial tissue function
barrier and lining tissue
give and example of epithelial tissue
outer layer of skin
connective tissue function
provides structural and functional support
give examples of connective tissue
cartilage, bone
muscle tissue function
specialised for contraction
give example of muscle tissue
cardiac cells
nervous tissue function
carries information throughout the body via electrical impulses
give an example of nervous tissue
nerves
give the different methods of obtaining biopsy tissue
incision or punch biopsy
- skin/oral surfaces
needle biopsy
- organs or lumps below skin
- Imaging techniques usually used to guide biopsy
endoscopic biopsy
- flexible tube with light and cameral - cutting tools can b used to collect tissue specimens
Cell staining techniques
Haematoxylin and Eosin (H and E)
- most commonly used
- haemotolixylin is a basic dye, which staines acidic structures (e.g. nucleic acids) blue/purple
- Eosin acidic and stains basic structures (such as cytoplasmic proteins) red or pink
PAS
Masson trichrome
- stains connective tissues
