What is flood hazard?
Flood conditions with the potential to cause injuries/fatalities. Damage can be economic or physical.
What is flood risk?
Potential for flood damage due to flooding based on likelihood of flooding, severity of flooding, and types of assets at risk
Define floodplain development
Any human made change to improved or unimproved real estate and not limited to buildings, structures, mining, dredging, filling, grading, paving, excavation, etc.
Consequences of Altering Natural Floodplains
Increased flooding, loss of floodplain function, habitat loss, threats to endangered species, impacts on water quality
When was the NFIP established?
1968
Purpose of NFIP (3)
(1) Reduce expenditures on Federal Disaster Assistance, (2) reduce flood risk, (3) provide access to flood insurance
