Intro to Ecology Flashcards
Ecology
Branch of science that says life on earth is not evenly distributed
Biotic factor
Living organism that shapes its environment
Abiotic factor
Non-living part of an ecosystem that shapes its environment
Interdependence
Biotic and abiotic factors work together and depend on each other ecologically
“Ecology” comes from?
Oikos (house) and Logy (study)
Physical abiotic factors include?
Temperature, pH, salinity, acidity, etc…
Chemical abiotic factors include?
Oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, carbon dioxide, etc…
Species
An individual organism in a population. Can have fertile offspring, is unique compared to different species, and has DNA.
Ex: Bakhaw lalaki mangrove (Rhizophora apiculata)
Populations
A group consisting of members of the same species. They interact and produce similar characteristics.
Ex: A mangal (forest of mangroves)
Communities
Different populations living in the same area
Ex: Estuary with mangroves, crabs, fish
Ecosystem
Communities, with abiotic factors considered
Estuary, including brackish (salty) water and sand
Biome
A group of ecosystems with the same climate
Philippines has estuaries, rainforests, mudflats, etc…
Biosphere
All the ecosystems together
Anywhere on Earth where life exists.
Autecology
(Population Ecology)
Study of an individual organism/species
A study of all the mangroves in Bais City
Synecology
Studying a community or multiple populations
A study of a particular estuary in Bais City
