A drug
Substance that changes the way the mind and body works
Medicine
Substance used to treat, prevent, or diagnose illness
Drug misuse
Incorrect use of a prescription or over the counter drug: inappropriate amount, frequency, strength, or manner
Drug abuse
The use of an illegal drug or the intentional misuse of a prescription or over the counter drug
Prescription drug
Obtained only with the written order from a doctor or licensed health professional
Over the counter
A drug that can be purchased without a prescription
Side effect
An unwanted body change that is not related to the main purpose of the drug
Tolerance
The body adjusts to the effects of the drug. Larger doses are needed in order to achieve the same effect
Withdrawal
Feelings of discomfort, distress, and an intense craving for a substance that happens when the use of the substance is stopped
Addiction
A physiological and/or psychological dependence if drugs
Depressants
Central nervous system slows down brain function, pulse, breathing and blood
Stimulants
Speed up the CNS functioning, accelerating the heart rate, elevate the blood pressure and “speed-up” or over stimulate the body
Hallveigens
Cause the user to perceive things differently than they actually are
Narcotics
Relieve pain, induced euphoria and creates mood changes in the user
Four ways drugs enter the body
Orally (mouth)
Inhaled (through nose)
Injection (needle) most risk of infection
Topicae (skin)
