Intro to Digital Technologies Flashcards
analog computer
A computer that uses mechanical operations to perform calculations, as with older style car speedometer or slide rule
ARM
Previously called Advanced RISC (reduced instruction set computing) Machine. A technology that contains a simplified architecture for a computer process to increase battery life.
artificial intelligence (AI)
The ability of computing devices to exhibit intelligence
ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange)
A computer code that numerically represents letters in the English alphabet to enable the transfer of text between computing devices.
binary system
A system of two possible values, 0 and 1, called binary digits, or bits
binary digits
A value in the binary system, either 1 or 0
bit
The smallest unit a computer can understand and act on. An abbreviation for binary digit.
byte
A collection of 8 bits
cache memory
A memory area, located on or near the microprocessor chip, where the most frequency used data is stored
central processing unit (CPU)
The part of your computer system that interprets instructions and processes data. Also referred to as the processor or core
cloud storage
Services that allow users to store documents and other files online
computer
An electronic, programmable device that can assemble, process, and store data
computer cluster
A group of computers joined together to provide higher computing power
computer engineering (CE)
The study of computer hardware and software systems and programming how devices interface with each other
computer memory
Temporary storage areas on your computer, including random access memory (RAM) and cache memory
computer science (CS)
The study of how to design software, solve problems such as computer security threats, or come up with better ways of handling data storage
computing power
Tasks accomplished by a computing system compared to the resources used
converged device
A type of device that combines several technologies, such as the ability to calculate, store data, and connect to the internet. Examples of this type of device include smartphones, GPS navigation systems, digital cameras, and smart appliances
cybersecurity
Methods used to protect the computing environment of an individual user, an organization, or a government
data
Raw facts: what you put into a computer
database administration
A career field in which workers are responsible for making sure that information stored in a database is available to and usable by those who need access to the information and that the information is secure from unauthorized access
desktop computer
A non-portable computer whose central processing unit (CPU) is housed in a tower configuration or, in some cases, within the monitor, as with the Apple iMac
digital computer
A computer that represents data using binary code
dynamic RAM (DRAM)
The type of memory most commonly found in computers; works quickly and is compact and affordable. Requires electricity and is fragile, meaning that the data held in RAM must constantly be refreshed
