Intro to counter strain Flashcards
What do Gamma motor neurons do?
Set and fine-tune activity of the moment-to-moment find adjustment of posture and locomotion
What is Sherrington’s Law?
When 1 muscle receives impulse to contract, its antagonist receives signal to relax
How to treat muscle where strain is reported but non observed?
Bring muscle into a shorten position to revers hyperactivity of spindles
What does Trauma damage?
Myofibrils and microcirculation
Superior Thoracic aperture is bounded by?
T1, 1st ribs, Costal Cartilage of 1st rib and superior border of manubrium
Absolute contraindications to counterstrain (3)
- Fracture
- Torn Ligament
- Patient refusal
Where are tender points usually found?
- Muscle belly
2. Tendinous insertions
How much force on tenderpoint?
Enough to blanch fingernail
ID tenderpoint?
4x more painful than surrounding tissue
When you are in the right spot you may feel?
Therapeutic pulse
If multiple tender points?
Treat most severe or one in the middle
If you are unable to reduce tenderness what does this mean?
That there is likely another TP
Ant TPs generally require?
Flexion and visa versa
Post treatment?
- Tell patient not to test rough movements for several days
2. Tell Pt to drink water (no ETOH for 3 days)
Post treatment soreness?
Follow up?
Normal
3-7 days if possible
