Intro To Clinical Toxicology Flashcards
Define clinical toxicology.
The prevention and treatment of diseases caused by chemicals.
Define toxidrome.
A group of signs and symptoms that consistently result from particular toxins.
Quick assessment of neurological status (AVPU):
Alert, awake; responds to Verbal stimuli; responds to Painful stimuli; Unresponsive.
If decreased LOC, consider (SNOT):
Sugar (hypertonic glucose), Naloxone (competitive opioid antagonist), Oxygen (treat hypoxia), Thiamine (Wernicke’s encephalopathy).
ABG with increased PCO2 = ?
Hypoventilation resp. acidosis.
ABG with decreased PCO2 = ?
Hyperventilation resp. alkalosis.
ABG with decreased HCO3 = ?
Metabolic acidosis.
Decreased PO2/sat = ?
Hypoxia.
Contraindication to orogastric lavage:
If airway not protected or ingestion of corrosive or hydrocarbon.
Contraindication to activated charcoal:
Airway not protected or intestinal obstruction.
Contraindication to whole bowel irrigation:
Bowel obstruction, perforation, ileus, and in patients with hemodynamic instability or compromised unprotected airways.
Properties of drugs that can be dialyzed:
Water soluble, low Vd, low molecular weight, less protein bound.
Normal Breathing Rate (bpm):
12-20 BPM or 16-24
Normal BP:
120/80 mm Hg
Normal Pulse:
60-100 beats/min
