Unity

A

Unity is being together or at one with someone or something. It’s the opposite of being divided. This is a word for togetherness or oneness. When the north won the Civil War, it assured the unity of the United States. Sports teams wear uniforms to show unity, and their fans wear team colors for the same reason.

Equity is often used interchangeably with equality, but they have distinctly different meanings. While equality demands everyone should be treated the same regardless of differences, equity is giving everyone what they need to succeed.

Diversity: Difference(s) between two or more things. Examples: Diversity in plants include trees, bushes, flowers, grass, etc. Diversity in dogs include big dogs, small dogs, long haired dogs, short-haired dogs, etc. Similarly, in people things such as race and skin color, religion, age, disabilities, etc.

Ethics is primarily concerned with attempting to define what is good for the individual and for society. It also tries to establish the nature of obligations, or duties, that people owe themselves and each other.

A

Determination is “overcoming obstacles in order to reach my goal.” Determination is like climbing a mountain. You have to know what you want to achieve, then put one foot in front of the other until you reach the top.

A

Justice helps us figure out what is fair, what is right and what is wrong. When justice is working, everyone feels like they are being treated fairly. Rules and laws help people figure out what is ‘just’ or fair.

Social Contract

A

A social contract or political contract is a perceived agreement among the people of a state about the rules that will define their government. These rules are usually called laws. Laws help to make sure people have rights and that their rights are protected. One kind of social contract is a constitution.

Superior comes from the Latin word meaning above and it literally means something that is above others in quality or status.

A

A federal system of government is one that divides the powers of government between the national (federal) government, and state and local government.

Constitutional

A

A constitution is a set of rules that guides how a country, state, or other political organization works. The constitution may tell what the branches of the government are, what powers they have, and how they work. It may also state the rights of citizens.

State Government

A

All states have three branches of government and their own constitutions. People elect a governor to be in charge of the executive branch (like the president). They also elect representatives to make laws in the legislative branch.

Local Government

A

Local government is the smallest form of the three types of government. The federal government oversees the entire country, and the state government oversees an entire state. Meanwhile, the local governments oversee the smaller areas that make up a state, like cities and towns.

A

Kids Encyclopedia Facts. To compromise is to make a deal where one person gives up part of his or her demand. In arguments, compromise is a concept of finding agreement through communication, through a mutual acceptance of terms, while often involving variations from an original goal or desire.

Negotiate

A

Negotiation involves abilities such as listening to others, expressing empathy, and to coming to a good compromise. Children practice these skills early in life such as by deciding what game to play with their friends or by coming to an agreement with their sibling about who should get to play with which new toy.

Hierarchy

A

A hierarchy (in Greek: Ιεραρχία; this comes from ιερός-hieros, sacred, and άρχω-arkho, rule) is a way of ranking and organizing things or people. Beneath the top of the hierarchy, each part of it is below some other part. This turns out to be like a pyramid.

Philosophy

A

he word. philosophy comes from the Greek language. It means “love of wisdom.” Philosophy is the study of some of the most basic questions about human life. For example, what can people really know about life? Or, are human beings basically good or evil?

State of nature

A

The state of nature is the existence of people without an overseeing authority. When we say ‘state of nature’, we are talking about a society without rules, politics, or government. In this state, the people are free to do what they please with no defined duties or obligations.
