Q

How do you specify the save location and file name for your render?

A

Click the folder in the circled area. If you are doing a mulit-pass render (render passes for use in After Effects), you would enter the same information in the Multi-Pass Image section as well. Give it the identical name and save location as your main render (copy and paste the information into this field).

Q

What do I do if the program is acting funny?

A

Restart the program or reboot your computer. Also, look to see if there is an update for your current version (.2, .3, .4 etc.). The program can be buggy at times. You might not want to jump to a whole new version (e.g. from 2025 to 2026), until at least one update has been released (e.g. 2026.1).

Q

What is the issue with this disc?

A

There isn’t enough geometry to create a smooth edge appearance at this viewing distance. Increase the rotational segment number until you achieve a smooth appearance.

Q

What does this control (located at the top of the Viewport)?

A

It controls how you see your geometry in the Viewport. The quality decreases as you descend the list. If you want to see the actual polygons (wireframe), you need to choose an option with ‘Lines’ in the name.

24
Q

What type of render creates a low-quality fast render? And what is this render good for?

A

A Viewport render. This is good to get a general sense of timing, pacing, and the animation. This can often be used as a placeholder if an edit is occurring at the same time.

Q

Where should my Node Editor go if I have 2 screens?

A

On a second screen. This widow requires a lot of real estate in practice. Click on the hamburger icon and choose ‘undock’. Move and expand the window on the second monitor and then go to Window>Customization>Save Layout As…and name it. This will add it as a new layout option at the top of the interface.

27
Q

What hotkey activates the Rotate tool?

A

R

28
Q

How do you active the help manual for a particular item?

A

You can often right-click on an item or operation and select ‘Show Help’ from the bottom of the popup menu. The manual is an excellent resource.

29
Q

How do I dock a window?

A

Click and drag the hamburger icon in the upper-left corner of the window, and place in a new area. A solid white line will preview where the docking will occur.

30
Q

How do I add a keyframe to a specific property?

A

Click the empty diamond symbol next to the property.

31
Q

What would you adjust to render at a different frame rate?

A

You need to actually change it in two places. The first is inside the Render Settings window and the second place is in Project Setting (CMD+D). Project Settings will appear in the Attributes window. You need to set both of these at the beginning of your project or any set keyframes could get their timing altered. Additionally, don’t work in fractional frame rates like 29.97, the program doesn’t deal with it correctly. In the case of 29.97, work in 30 instead.

32
Q

If you wanted to switch this render from a PNG sequence to a MOV file, where would you make that change?

A
33
Q

What does this do?

A

It will toggle the active view. If you are in a single view, it will toggle a 4-up view. To solo any of these other views, simply click the same symbol in any of the windows.

34
Q

What hotkey activates the Move tool?

A

E (maybe think of ‘e’ as the last letter in ‘move’)

35
Q

Where should you create your ‘tex’ folder (texture folder)?

A

On the same level as your .C4D project file. This will ensure the link to your textures will never break, even if you move the project to a different drive or a different computer.

36
Q

How do I create a new material?

A

Expand the Material Manager (looks like a crystal ball) and click the plus symbol.

37
Q

Why is After Effects an important step in the workflow pipeline?

A

It allows you to make changes to your 3D without doing a completely new render. You can also add After Effects elements that are perfectly tracked with your C4D render. Not every render requires this step, but most should. Reach out when you are ready and I’ll walk you through it.

38
Q

Can I organize my textures and HDRIs into subfolders within the tex folder?

A

Absolutely. You don’t want 100s of textures free floating in the tex folder, so if you anticipate a large number of textures, create categorical subfolders.

39
Q

What are these?

A

Primitives. They are basic shapes that can be adjusted with parametric controls. Their parametric condition can be broken by hitting the ‘C’ key. The object will then be an editable polygonal object.

40
Q

If you want to extrude a spline what type of modeling object do you need to use?

A

An Extrude Object. Make the spline a child of the Extrude Object.

41
Q

Why is it important to organize objects into the template categories?

A

Scenes can quickly become a visual mess without some kind of organization (dozens or 100s of objects are not uncommon). You don’t need to use this system, but some kind of system is professionally necessary.

42
Q

Where should I place my textures and HDRIs that I download?

A

Inside your tex folder. The tex folder should be located on the same Finder level as your project file.

43
Q

Which button creates a null object?

A
44
Q

What does this do?

A

Brings the playhead to the start of the timeline.

45
Q

What kind of light should you use to light a scene with an HDRI image?

A

Dome light. Drag the HDRI image from the Asset Browser into the highlighted field or click the folder icon and load an HDRI from your hard drive (make sure it’s in the ‘tex’ folder!).

46
Q

What does this object do?

A

It is a Subdivision Surface and it creates object smoothing. This allows for detailed, smoothed shapes with a low polygon count.

47
Q

What does this control?

A

It is the preview range. It determines how long the the timeline plays before looping back to the start of the range. It does not control what frames are ultimately rendered. That information is determined inside of the Render Settings window.

48
Q

How do you rename objects?

A

Double-click the name.

49
Q

How do you group objects?

A

Option+G

50
Q

If you are not doing a multi-pass render (render passes for After Effects), which box should you uncheck?

A

You should turn this off as it might create unnecessary renders.

51
Q

What are bevels?

A

It’s the shape characteristics of the edges. Round edges are a common bevel type.

52
Q

What do the 1, 2, and 3 keys do?

A

Navigate the camera

53
Q

What do these do?

A

From top to bottom: Move, rotate, scale. The hotkeys are: E, R, T, respectively.

54
Q

How do you change the color of a Standard material?

A

Click the swatch or you can select the eyedropper and sample a color anywhere on screen.

55
Q

What do these lighting controls do? And what are the difference between the two controls?

A

They both control light intensity. Use the top slider first, and if you need much more light, the bottom slider is a multiplier of the top value.

56
Q

What do these do?

A

They lock the axes of your choice and disable the selected axis when moving an object directly in the Viewport. For instance, if you activate ‘Y’, you won’t be able to drag objects up and down. This can be very helpful and eliminate unwanted movements. This does not lock the ability to move an object in the Coordinates Manager.

57
Q

What does this do?

A

For the selected object, it will add keyframes for position, rotation, and scale.

58
Q

How to you uniformly scale an object in the Viewport?

A

Enable scale (T key) and click and drag outside of the axis handles.

59
Q

If I mess up my interface layout, what can I do?

A

Simply select a different layout and then select the original layout.

60
Q

How do I search for things in the Asset Browser?

A
  1. You can click through the list view on the left side to find a specific category 2. You can use the tabs at the top to narrow the search. 3. You can use the search field to type in a keyword
61
Q

If I procure a stock 3D object but it looks really angular and boxy what should I do?

A

It’s likely it was created with another 3D application and it has lost its subdivision surface component. Make it a child of a subdivision surface and see if that helps.

62
Q

What does the Align to Spline tag do? (You can access this by right-clicking on an object and finding it under the Animation Tags category.)

A

It aligns a model, light, or camera to the spline, allowing you to animate it along the path.

63
Q

What does this do?

A

Moves one frame back. Hotkey is ‘F’.

64
Q

Where do you specify which frames to render?

A

If you wanted to render from the start of the Timeline to frame 100, you would enter 0 in the top box and 100 in the lower box.

65
Q

What button actives the Redshift Renderview?

A
66
Q

If I want to align on object to a floor, what are the best views?

A

Front or a side view.

67
Q

What are the shortcut keys to move the playhead one frame?

A

F and G
