What is Jin?
Jin are clear, light, thin and watery, and circulate in the exterior of the body (skin and muscles) with the Wei Qi.
Jin is under control of the Lungs,
which disseminate them to the skin and of the Upper Burner, which controls
their transformation and movement.
What is Ye?
Ye is thicker, turbid fluids located primarily in the bowels and viscera, brain, and bones and responsible for lubricating and moistening.
These are the more turbid, dense, and heavy fluids, and they circulate in
the interior of the body with the Ying (Nutritive) Qi.
Move relatively slowly.
Under control of (transformed by) Spleen and Kidneys, moved and excreted by Middle and Lower Burner
What are the 4 diagnostic methods (Si (4) Zhěn)
- Wàng: Inspection/Observation
- Wén: Hearing and Smelling
- Wèn: Inquiring / Interrogation
- Qiē: Palpation

What are the functions of Jin?
- To moisten and partly to nourish skin and muscles. (exuded as sweat, but also manifests as tears, saliva.
- To form a compound of Blood (thin out the Blood and prevent its stasis)
What are the functions of Ye?
- To moisten the joints, spine, brain, bone marrow.
- Lubricate the “orifices of the sense organs” i.e. eyes, ears, nose and
mouth
What are the pulse positions?
Front (Cùn), Middle (Guan), Rear (Chǐ)
What do the pulse positions relate to?
Front (Cùn) = Heart/Lung (Xin/Fei)
Middle (Guān) = Stomach Spleen (Wei/Pi)
Rear (Chǐ) = Kidneys (Shen)
What is the TCM term for “essence and blood are of the same source”
jing xue tong yuan
*remember jing = blood, xue = blood, yuan = original
What is pre-heaven jing?
Passed to from the parents to the fetus to
nourishes during pregnancy.
Determines:
basic constitution, strength, and vitality
It is FIXED in quantity, determined at birth: it cannot be added to, only conserved and used up more slowly.
It is stored in the Kidneys.
Conserve by striving for balance in all life
activities: moderation in diet, work/rest, sexual activity. Irregularity or excess in these areas wastes Prenatal Jing.
What is post-heaven jing?
Post-heaven jing is the complex of essences thus refined and extracted by the Stomach/Spleen and Lungs. St/Sp/Lu extract and refine Qi.
What flavor goes to the Lungs?
Pungent/Acrid
