intro to cell structure and function Flashcards
define cytology
study of cells
what are routine functions (with examples)
functions performed by cells for their own survival
ex: metabolism, cell division, protein synthesis
what are specialized functions (with examples)
functions performed by cells in collaboration with other cells for the whole body to survive
ex: secretion of hormone, transmit signals
define parenchyma
parenchyma consists of cells which conduct specific functions of the organ and it comprises the bulk of the organ
define stroma
everything else in the organs that help parenchyma to perform functions (nerves, connective tissues, blood vessels, ducts)
outcomes in chemical reactions involved in glucose breakdown (glycolysis, krebs cycle, oxidative phosphorylation)
production of ATP which is used as energy for different life processes such as active transport mechanism, muscle contraction, action potential production, hormone secretion
outcomes in chemical reactions involving DNA (transcription, translation)
produces protein which is used in the cell or it is translocated to the membrane or it is exported to extracellular environments
define pathology and pathophysiology
pathology: study of diseases
pathophysiology: convergence of pathology and physiology
