What are rotten boroughs?
constituency that is now depopulated and rural, but still has lots of MPs
What is a pocket borough?
constituency controlled by the aristocratic landowners
What are the landed gentry?
doesn’t have a title and can’t sit in the house of lords, but is still wealthy and controls land
What is deference?
respect for people in a higher social standing than you, e.g working class respects middle and upper classes as above them
Why was there a north/south divide in England by 1851?
because coal and iron ore deposits had developed industry in the north whereas south stayed mainly agricultural
Why was there a north/south divide in Scotland?
because central and southern scotland flourished due to rapid industrialisation like shipbuilding and textiles, whereas in the north and other remote areas school attendance was poor so only spoke gaelic and stayed agricultural
What were the three political parties in 1851?
the whigs, the tories and the radicals
What did both the whigs and the tories have in common?
both supported by landowners and aristocratic families, both christian and both looking out for their own class
What did the corn laws consist of?
tariffs on grain imported from other countries to favour domestic agriculture
When were the corn laws repealed?
1846
What was the result of the repeal of the corn laws?
ended Robert Peels tenure as PM and peel items split from the tories, who still believed in protection and continuation ofcorn law, whereas peel items believed in free trade
