Intro to Biology Vocabulary Flashcards
Adaption
A trait that helps an organism
Biosphere
Consists of all life on Earth and all parts of the Earth in which life exists, including land, water, and the atmosphere
Cells
Basic unit of life
Consumers
An organism that obtains energy and nutrients by feeding on other organisms or their remains
DNA
A complex molecule containing the genetic information that makes up the chromosomes.
Domain
A taxonomic category above the kingdom level. The three domains are Archaea, Bacteria, and Eukarya.
Ecosystem
A biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment.
Eukaryotes
Cells that contain nuclei
Evolution
The gradual change in a species over time
Genes
Chemical factors that determine traits
Homeostasis
Process by which organisms maintain a relatively stable internal environment
Multicellular
Made up of more than one cell
Natural Selection
A natural process resulting in the evolution of organisms best adapted to the environment.
Organism
Any living thing
Photosynthesis
process by which plants and some other organisms use light energy to convert water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and high-energy carbohydrates such as sugars and starches
