Intro to Biology Flashcards
Define prokaryotes and eukaryotes
Prokaryotes: unicellular organisms that have no organelles/nucleus
Eukaryotes: unicellular or multicellular organisms that have organelles and nucleus
Levels of organization
Subatomic particles -> atoms -> elements -> molecules -> macromolecules -> cell parts -> cells -> tissues -> organs -> systems -> organisms -> populations -> communities -> ecosystems -> biomes -> biosphere
Define monomer
A molecule that can be bonded to other identical molecules to form a polymer
- Fatty acids, amino acids, glucose, nucleotides
Define macromolecule
Polymers
- Lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, nucleic acids (RNA, DNA), vitamins
Define amino acid
Monomers that link up to form proteins
Characteristics of life
Ability to…
- Respirate
- Grow and develop
- Respond to stimuli
- Adapt to surrounding environment
- Maintain homeostasis
