Intro to Biochemical Classes Flashcards
What are Carbohydrates comprised of?
C, H, and O
What are the building blocks of Carbs?
Sugars
What are carbs used for?
energy (source of energy) and used to store energy
What biochemical class is Glycogen in and what is it’s purpose?
Carbs; store energy in your body and inside your cells and release it when energy is needed
What are lipids comprised of?
C. H, and O
What are the building blocks of lipids?
Chains of carbons (making them hydrophobic) – i.e. fatty acids
What are all cell membranes made of?
Phospholipids (has a positively charged phosphate, which makes it somewhat hydrophilic)
What are the building blocks of lipids?
C, H, O, N, and S
What are the building blocks of proteins?
chain of amino acids
What kinds of proteins exist?
Structural, chemical, channel, and messengers (i.e. neurotransmitters)
What are nucleic acids made of?
C, H, O, N, and P
What are the building blocks of nucleic acids?
nucleotides
What are nucleic acids used for?
DNA, RNA, and important for energy transfer in a cell (ATP)
