Intro to Bio Flashcards
Properties of life
reproduction, growth/development, energy use/exertion, well-ordered structure, cells, response to the environment and evolutionary changes
biosphere
all life on earth
ecosystem
all living and non-living components
community
all the interacting populations in ecosystem
population
group of interacting individuals of one species
organism
individual living being
organ system
group of organs that work together (respiratory, digestive etc.)
organ
multiple tissues that cooperate to perform special tasks
tissue
integrated group of similar cells that work together
organelle
component of a cell for specific function
molecule
groups of atoms bonded together
atom
fundamental unit og matter
Hypothesis
proposed explanation to a question that can be investigated (observation and experimentation investigate a hypothesis)
Theory
much broader explanation, well substantiated and comprehensive
Controlled experiment
test is run multiple times with only one variable changing
Independent vairable
what is being changed for the experiment
Dependent Varaible
the response to the independent variable being changedN
Negative control
a group for which a change is expected
Positive control
a group for which a change is expected
pseudoscience
field of study that is falsey presented as having scientific basis
Peer review
evaluation of work by impartial, qualified, often anonymous experts who are not involved in that work (outside authorities help verify)
Primary source
original material presented by the person who performed the research
Secondary source
description/review of primary, often with commentary
Scientific table
efficient way to present a lot of data in a small amount of space
