Who is the most important Person in the counseling room?

Isaiah 9:6
“…and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
How can Isaiah 9:6 be used in counseling?
Jesus’ ministry was being with the disciples, calling them to salvation, confronting them with the Word, and to change their outlook and habitual behavior in life.
John 14:16
“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever”
How can John 14:16 be used in counseling?
The Spirit is the source of all genuine change of personality and behavior. Progressive sanctification. To be conformed into the image of Christ. Die to sin, live unto righteousness.
2 Cor 3:8
“will not the ministry of the Spirit have even more glory?”
How can 2 Cor 3:8 be used in counseling?
The Spirit’s ministry sanctifies the Christian’s life to be a ‘living epistle’
2 Tim 3:15-17
“…the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”
How can 2 Tim 3:15-17 be used in counseling?
This passage addresses the whole picture of human life: wise for salvation, doctrine, conviction, correction, and training for righteousness.

Definition: nouthetic counseling
To effect a change of personality and behavior, by engaging and influencing the mind (nous), with the Word of God and its practical application to their situation, for the counselee’s benefit, that they may be conformed more to the image of Christ.
Col 3:16
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”
How can Col 3:16 be used in counseling?
All Christians have a responsibility to counsel by teaching and admonishing one another with the Word of God.
Rom 15:14
“I myself am satisfied about you, my brothers, that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge and able to instruct one another.”
How can Rom 15:14 be used in counseling?
It speaks of who is qualified to be a biblical counselor: know the Word of God to address how I should live in my own life, then I will be able to help someone else in this process.
James 1:4
“And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”
How can James 1:4 be used in counseling?
The goal for counselees is wholeness: maturing and intact in every part.
1 Tim 4:16
“Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers.”
How can 1 Tim 4:16 be used in counseling?
Take aim on myself. Concentrate on my faith and conscience, prayer, qualifications, self-discipline, reading and teaching, and on my attitude. Persevere in doing these things according to Scripture.
Self-discpline
You cannot help others grow and restructure their lives if you have no self-discipline.
1 Tim 5:1, 2
“Do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father, younger men as brothers.”
How can 1 Tim 5:1, 2 be used in counseling?
Talk to counselees with restoration in mind and an expectation for a sustained relationship through and after counseling.
